Writing for the Desired Effect
To you, it may seem that I am listening to you, fully engaged in every word you’re saying. I’m looking straight at you, mirroring your expressions, laughing on cue - why wouldn’t you think any different?
Yet, when you pause to prompt me for some kind of input, I stutter and have to ask the most annoying thing to any talker.
‘Sorry, what did you say again?’
The truth is, I have a hidden talent. A talent that only stays hidden when just expected to listen. Truly, I am an exceptionally good listener. I mean, I can listen to two completely different conversations at the same time. The one with you and the one going on inside my head. And let me tell you, though my inner voice is utterly exhausting and LOUD (and I am so sorry that it interferes with our time), it’s extremely quick-witted and brilliant!
It has already created a masterpiece from your inspiring words.
My inner thoughts have an ability to shout out one creative idea to the next, explore all concepts, build a business strategy for each potential masterpiece. I’m so absorbed that I’ve mentally completed the task just as you’ve finished pitching it.
I’m back in the zone, looking into your eyes with a huge smile on my face. That smile slowly redraws back into a frown as I realise it’s again my cue to speak and you’re waiting.
To my relief, I manage to get you talking again. I know I need to fully listen, but it takes so much energy and concentration that it forces me to yawn. Oh gosh – I promise you; I’m not bored of you! I am extremely interested in what you have to say, really, I am! If only you were telepathic. Now, I’m faced with the pressure not to yawn on top of muting that annoying inner voice, just so I can focus all my attention on you. I’m telling myself to create; design later - I’d hate to ask you to repeat everything again. How many more chances have I got left before you up and leave? I’d rather you question the funny faces I’m pulling in order to stop my mouth from opening out a long, over exaggerated yawn, than you, questioning my intelligence. I can assure you; it has nothing to do with my intelligence… In fact, it couldn’t be further from the truth - Is it possible that you understand what is going through my head and recognise my potential? I hope so as I have so much to offer…
You must be wondering why I’ve been rambling?
Here’s the thing. Many people won’t spend their time reading waffle but well written waffle that has meaning has purpose.
You had a desire to find out a little more about how my mind works; and you did. You stayed on this page for about a minute and a half – far above the average for this type of page.
Why am I telling you this? I’m telling you this because I shared with you an example of how writing can achieve desired effects. It’s powerful. So powerful, in fact, that I set up a company to deliver professional writing services to do just that – Owen-Davis.
